Legion Go S becomes first third-party handheld console with SteamOS Valve expands access to the operating system.

During this week's CES show, Lenovo unveiled a new generation of handheld consoles. Among them is a Legion Go S model that runs SteamOS.

Legion Go S - Powered by SteamOS – which is the machine's full name – thus becomes the first third-party handheld console to use Valve's Linux-based operating system.

This is the same operating system used for the Steam Deck, among others, and is built for playing Steam games. Valve also has plans to expand support for other handheld consoles in the future.

"The same work we're doing to support Lenovo Legion Go S will improve compatibility with other handheld consoles. Prior to the Legion Go S launch, we will release a beta version of SteamOS that should improve the experience on other handhelds, and users can download and test this on their own."

Valve further notes that SteamOS users are not locked to playing on Steam. Users are free to install other games and programs, the company writes on their website.

Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS will roll out sometime in May. A variant running Windows is coming already in January.
