Elder Scrolls 6: Why Classic Fantasy Could Be Gaming's Next Big Thing

In the evolving landscape of fantasy RPGs, here's a thought that might surprise you - Elder Scrolls 6 could become the most innovative title in the genre by simply staying true to its roots. As someone who's been immersed in fantasy RPGs since the early days of Dungeons & Dragons, I've watched the genre's core remain largely unchanged - until now.

Recently, we've seen a dramatic shift in approach. Take Obsidian's Avowed, launching next February. They're taking bold steps by abandoning traditional class systems and conventional fantasy tropes. While their work on Pillars of Eternity was impressive, sometimes players crave the simplicity of classic fantasy elements - where elves are simply elves.

The situation with the new Fable further illustrates this trend. The original's British humor cleverly poked fun at fantasy clichés, but today's genre has become so self-referential it's verging on pure parody. Even The Witcher 4 maintains its distinct identity with its gritty, Slavic-folklore approach (which is fantastic but decidedly unique).

This is precisely why Elder Scrolls 6 has me intrigued. By the time it finally releases (yes, Todd Howard, we're all waiting), gamers might be yearning for something refreshingly straightforward - a game that lets you simply choose your race and class before embarking on classic dungeon adventures, free from complex genre deconstruction.

My first Oblivion experience remains etched in memory: spending hours crafting the perfect character, emerging from those gloomy sewers, and being awestruck by that magnificent sunrise. Similarly, Skyrim created unforgettable moments - like arranging stolen forks in Breezehome at 3 AM, embracing the pure joy of fantasy role-playing without trying to be overtly clever or profound. It was straightforward fantasy that allowed complete player freedom.

Paradoxically, Elder Scrolls 6 might revolutionize the genre by being the only major title not attempting to revolutionize it. Sometimes, what we crave isn't fusion cuisine but a perfectly executed classic recipe.

In the end, these are just my two septims on the matter. Perhaps the most revolutionary approach in modern gaming is staying true to the timeless appeal of classic fantasy.
