Remember that whole drama with Helldivers 2 and PlayStation accounts? Looks like Sony's finally seen the light for their single-player lineup too. The gaming giant just announced they're making PlayStation accounts optional for some of their biggest PC hits – Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.
If you've been holding off on jumping into these games because of the account requirement (and trust me, plenty of PC players were), that barrier's coming down. But Sony's not giving up entirely on getting PC players into their ecosystem – they're just switching from stick to carrot.
Boot up Spider-Man 2, for instance, and you'll still get the full web-slinging experience without a PlayStation account. But if you do link up, you'll get early access to some pretty sweet suits, including the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and Miles' 2099 variant. Same deal with Horizon – sign in, and Aloy gets access to the exclusive Nora Valiant outfit. God of War players? You can snag the Armor of the Black Bear set for Kratos, though you can also earn this one through regular gameplay.
There's also the trophy hunters to consider. While Steam achievements work regardless, you'll need that PlayStation account if you want to rack up those PlayStation-specific trophies. Plus, if you've got friends on PlayStation Network, you can keep up with their gaming adventures – though let's be real, that's probably not the main draw for most PC players.
This is a pretty big shift from Sony, and it's worth noting it didn't come out of nowhere. PC players weren't exactly quiet about their frustration – just look at what happened with Helldivers 2 last year. The backlash was so intense, with review bombs hitting Steam hard, that Sony had to walk back their account requirements then too.
Things got even more interesting when modders started taking matters into their own hands. Over on NexusGames, someone actually put out a mod that stripped the PlayStation account requirement right out of God of War Ragnarök. Talk about sending a message.
For multiplayer games like Helldivers 2, PlayStation accounts make some sense – you need something to handle cross-play, manage toxic behavior, and keep track of progression across platforms. But for single-player adventures? Sony seems to have finally figured out that maybe the carrot works better than the stick.
The real question now is whether these optional perks will be enough to get PC players to create PlayStation accounts anyway. At least this time around, it's actually their choice to make.
