Hothead Games, devs of Big Win and Kill Shot, just rage quit after almost 20 years. Yeah, you heard that right. The Canadian studio, founded by Radical Entertainment alums back in '06, has filed for bankruptcy. Rough stuff.

Initially, they were all about digital console and PC titles. Then, like many studios, they pivoted to the free-to-play mobile market. Wilkinson, Hothead’s president and CEO, put it bluntly: they threw a bunch of small games at the wall, hoping something would stick. Spoiler alert: not much did.

But they didn't give up. They went back to their roots, cranking out sports games under the Big Win banner and shooters like Rivals at War (RAW) and Kill Shot. These titles? Huge wins. They finally found their groove.

Recently, Hothead had been cooking up a triple-A prototype, aiming for mobile, PC, and console releases. The plan? Secure those sweet publishing deals. However, securing those deals took way longer than expected. Two weeks ago, they were this close. Then, bam! First the mobile publisher bailed, citing a change in strategy. Then, just two weeks later, the console publisher followed suit. Game over. Bankruptcy was the only option left. Talk about a critical hit to their bottom line.

Wilkinson emphasized that Hothead was more than just its games. It was the people. Incredibly talented, dedicated folks, many of whom became lifelong friends. They shared everything: laughter, tears, celebrations, even grief. They found partners, started families. Wilkinson feels privileged to have worked alongside them for 16 years. He hopes this isn't the end of their story. They still believe they're destined to work together again, creating awesome stuff. Even if that doesn't happen, he's a better person for his time at Hothead. A true party of adventurers.
