Warhammer RPG reportedly shelved

Games Workshop has allegedly cancelled an unannounced Warhammer role-playing game at the end of last year, according to MP1st.

According to the website, the game was under development at a studio called Thought Pennies. This was founded in 2020 by former Star Wars and Final Fantasy veteran Tim Erns, focusing on creating role-playing games.

Thought Pennies was reportedly working on a collaborative action RPG, which according to employees was set in the Warhammer universe. The work was apparently being done in Unreal Engine 5, with development ongoing since at least 2022.

After several rounds of layoffs and a lack of funding, the project was however permanently shelved.

"We never missed a deadline, the feedback we received was good, our collaboration was strong. [...] Our publisher changed strategic direction, and our previous project is now without funding," wrote Thought Pennies executive Daniel Erickson on LinkedIn in November.

The news has emerged during an otherwise strong period for the Warhammer brand. Last year's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II was very successful and work on creating both film and TV based on the series - with Henry Cavill at the helm - is underway.
