Steam's year-end data is in, and it reveals some fascinating trends in how we play. Let's take a look. (This is more direct and less reliant on colloquialisms.)

Only 15% of playtime on Steam was dedicated to games released in 2024. This figure, while seemingly low, presents an interesting picture of the current gaming landscape. (This is more formal and less reliant on exclamation.) Mind. Blown.

But what about the veterans? A massive 47% of play sessions were dedicated to games released between one and seven years ago. And get this – a hefty 37% went to titles that are eight years old or more! Now that's some serious staying power.

Does this mean new releases are flopping? Not so fast. That 15% actually represents growth from last year's dismal 9%. It's a mini-resurgence! Perhaps fuelled by online sensations like Helldivers 2, Delta Force, and… wait for it… Banana? Yes, you read that correctly. And Black Myth: Wukong also put up some impressive numbers.

So, why aren't the new game numbers higher? A few reasons:

Live service games rule. Think Counter-Strike, Dota 2, PUBG. They've been around forever, and people are hooked. Breaking into that market is tough. Just ask Ubisoft about Skull and Bones. Ouch.

Steam's library is absolutely massive. We're talking over 200,000 titles! With over 200,000 titles available, compared to the approximately 18,000 released in 2024, Steam offers an immense library encompassing everything from genre-defining classic CRPGs to a vast array of other gaming experiences.

The data suggests that while players remain drawn to established favorites, new releases still find an audience, even amidst the platform's extensive back catalog. The unexpected popularity of titles like 'Banana' exemplifies the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the gaming community.
